In conversation with Viraj about his journey and special needs.
Tell us a little bit about yourself.
I'm Viraj Bhat. I’m 33 years old. I'm a software professional working in Bengaluru.
What are your hobbies and interests?
I love watching informative and entertaining videos on the internet. I also enjoy writing down my thoughts.
How has your journey been so far?
Not an easy one. I had to go to school, and attend certain extracurricular activities against my will, due to pressure from my parents. And that hampered my learning process and self-esteem to some extent. And the teachers and classmates/schoolmates weren't so well-behaved or civilized.
What has helped you in your journey?
I'm glad I got diagnosed with a learning disability after my first attempt in board examinations. Otherwise, I was feeling completely hopeless. Also, it was my thirst for knowledge that gave me a positive attitude for whatever I did.
What message would you like to give people with special needs and their family and friends?
Schooling should not come in the way of children's learning. This may be a cliché, but there is truth to it. People, especially those with special needs, should be very careful about their choice of books (or any form of media), association and diet. Diet because food affects a person's thought processes.
